Buddhist Education in the Age of Advanced Science and Technology

University Lecture
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, China

This is a lecture by Khenpo Sodargye at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on November 24, 2011, on the theme of "Buddhist Education in the Age of Developed Science and Technology." Core argument: the more advanced technology becomes, the more it needs Buddhist guidance; otherwise, material and spiritual aspects will be imbalanced. Einstein said "science without religion is lame," and contemporary society shows a huge gap between material development and moral decline. Buddhism's views on compassion and non-violence are timeless—masters who cultivated compassion even while imprisoned during the Cultural Revolution exemplify true spiritual achievement. Buddhist teachings enable people to repay the four kindnesses, possess a grateful heart, think openly, and remain non-attached. One should study Buddhism while young, openly acknowledge one's Buddhist faith, avoid superficial practice, and deeply study scriptures with actual practice. Science can only conquer outer space but cannot conquer the "inner space" of the mind; only Buddhism can solve fundamental problems.
