The Importance of Buddhism in Times of Catastrophe

University Lecture
University of Macao,China

From a Buddhist perspective, why do disasters occur? How should we face disasters? How can we prevent disasters? Buddhism views disasters as impermanent phenomena, encompassing both natural calamities and man-made catastrophes, often rooted in greed and negative actions. When facing disasters, sincere prayers to one's guru and to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas can help turn danger into safety. At the same time, we must reflect on our own conduct, accumulate merit and virtue, and cultivate right mindfulness and a sense of responsibility. By facing difficulties with wisdom and compassion, we protect ourselves while also benefiting others and the world. In the end, whether to believe or not—the choice is yours.
