Buddhism and Ecology

University Lecture
Nanjing Forestry University,China

From a Buddhist perspective, the true ecological crisis does not merely arise from the depletion of the Earth’s resources, but from the greed and ignorance within the human mind. When human desire becomes boundless, the environment inevitably suffers. The Buddhist teachings of contentment, moderation, and compassion for all living beings are, in fact, the remedies to heal our planet. The Khenpo encouraged young people to begin with the purification of their own minds — to replace greed with compassion and wastefulness with restraint — so that the world may be cleansed through kind thoughts, and life may be renewed through awakening.
