The Philosophy of Tibetan Buddhism

University Lecture
The University of Tokyo

Tibetan Buddhism originated from the Dharma lineage of Nalanda Monastery in India and was transmitted to Samye Monastery in Lhasa, the first monastery in Tibet. Through development, it divided into the Early Translation School (Nyingma) and Later Translation Schools (Gelug, Sakya, Kagyu, and others). Today, a worldwide "Tibet fever" or "Tibetan studies fever" has emerged, but correct understanding is needed to avoid prejudice. True Tibetan Buddhist practitioners should engage in long-term study, contemplation, and meditation, using wisdom to guide faith and compassion, and attain inner peace through learning teachings such as impermanence, bodhicitta, and emptiness, rather than merely focusing on external forms.
